Saturday 25/9 De blauwerstocht in Haringe (Smugglers' journey)

This is a form of an election in which mainly physical condition and stamina matter.
It consists of a nocturnal journey across the Belgian-French border in which smuggled goods of about 10 kg need to be passed across the border. Within a certain time frame, competitors must cross specific check points and a final destination. The only allowed aid tool is a map of the region. Across the region, 'komiezen', the customs officers try and catch the smugglers. Participants that get caught, lose points. Whoever reaches the end point with the most remaining points, wins the contest.
A 'blauwer' is the local name for a smuggler who used to bring different goods from across the border during the War, often chased by customs officers on watch.
Smuggled goods included: tabacco, food, grain, live pigs, wine, etc.

Should you wish to participate in this adventurous journey, be sure to subscribe on time as only a limited number of 80 participants can enroll.
